BrandSource member, Charley’s Appliance of El Dorado, Kansas, is giving back to their community in a big way. Each year, they find a way to support local nonprofits in their area. They have had great success through their Black Friday sales and in 2018 they chose to send some of that money to support their local homeless shelter, Butler Homeless Initiative.
Samuel McVay, co-owner of Charley’s Appliance, said “Our local homeless shelter, Butler Homeless Initiative (BHI), seemed like they would really be blessed by a little money headed into the winter months. They provide warm meals, clean laundry and a safe place to sleep for the homeless in our area.”
Charley’s worked with vendor partner, Whirlpool and used their merchandising funds to donate $25 of every appliance sold for the two weeks leading up to Black Friday. Their initial goal was $1,000, but they hit that goal in the first week and raised it to $1,500. The final count at the end of Black Friday was $1,600.
McVay continued, “Instead of just talking about price during Black Friday, we changed the narrative to giving back, which was a win-win-win scenario. Primarily, BHI won by being blessed with an influx of cash headed into winter. Next, the customer won by getting an appliance they needed at a great price, with the added satisfaction of knowing part of their purchase was combating the homelessness problem in our area. Lastly, Charley’s Appliance won. We tripled our previous year’s Black Friday sales, and doubled our store’s best day ever. Charley’s Appliance has always been very active locally, but this story will stick in our minds as a constant reminder of the importance of prioritizing community involvement.”
